Article from "The Advocate"-April 27th, 2006

The first time I laid eyes on a horse as a 4 year old girl, I knew my destiny was staring me in the face. Horses have not only become my career but they are my life. I have had the wonderful opportunity to experience and develop a kind of horsemanship that allows me to help both horses and humans.
The type of horsemanship that I have evolved into a lifestyle is founded upon the methods of California Spanish Vaquero combined with the modern disciplines of today. It's very normal for a horse in training to be worked in round pen, ridden in both western and english tack, in the ring and on trails, over fences, working cattle, shown, hunter paced and ponied. I firmly believe that these traditional principles of the Spanish Vaquero allow a horse to find it's place with integrity and confidence through release and feel. This confidence allows horses to perform many tasks with a relaxed sense of being. I try extremely hard to pass these concepts onto my clients while developing their eye for the horses language. I focus on helping people understand the subtle signals horses use to communicate and how they make decisions. With this understanding people can learn how to feel of their horse and use the principles to gain trust and respect from their horse.
My background stems from scattered experience as a child riding wild neighbor horses to the occasional lesson. As a teen I purchased my first "crazy" untrained TB mare and learned a lifetime's knowledge. I continued to ride and moved into the hunter/jumper and dressage world. After graduating from Cornell University, I worked on the A circuit for Grand Prix Jumper trainers. A serious accident involving a horse flipping over on me and shattering my pelvis caused me to look for other avenues. I happened upon Buck Brannaman and have been studying ever since. My business began with more of a hunter/jumper base, but has become much more versatile and focuses on young horses and problem horses. There are still quite a few off the track TB's finding new careers, rescues who are being rehabed and some choice sale horses. Higher Ground Farm has become a place where people can be who they are and enjoy their horse with no pretense. Everyone is focused on learning more about and from their horse in a way that involves feel and trust. We are all there to master that incredible feeling where horse and human become one and are weightless.
